- Splitting
- In the fabrication process of BamX, the first step involves generating slats from a given material. This process varies depending on the material used, although we prioritize the use of natural materials. For bamboo, the raw bamboo poles are cut to the required length using basic hand tools such as a hand saw. Following this, the poles are split using a traditional hand splitting device. This manual splitting process ensures correct dimensions and maintains the integrity of the bamboo fibers. For other materials, such as plywood, the material could be processed using a milling machine to generate slats of appropriate dimensions, ensuring compatibility with the overall design of BamX and adaptability of the fabrication process to advanced technologies.
- Marking
- Marking the precise distances between joints is crucial for BamX structures. This process varies based on the material used. For natural materials like bamboo, a manual approach can be employed driven by human precision. Measurements needs to be meticulously taken based on digital models, with a peer review system established in place for accuracy checks. Alternatively, for industrialized materials, automation through milling machines offers high precision. Digital models guide the automated process, ensuring consistent and accurate marking. Whether manual or automated, precise distance marking is fundamental to BamX’s fabrication process, guaranteeing geometrical and structural coherence.
- Drilling
- After splitting the material and marking distances, the next step involves drilling holes for inserting screws, following the marked measurements. These screws will connect two slats together to establish revolute joint connections. The process varies depending on the material used. For natural materials like bamboo, meticulous manual drilling with basic hand tools is essential to preserve accurate joint distances. Conversely, industrialized materials can benefit from automated drilling using milling machines. Whether manual or automated, the objective remains consistent: to produce slats with precise hole placements for optimal assembly.
- Fastening
- In the final stage of fabrication, BamX components are assembled by connecting together the slats, each prepared with precision-cut holes, using steel screws. This assembly process needs to be carried out manually, regardless of the material used. After assembling a component, the screws need to be fastened to firmly secure the joints, which helps to ensure the integrity of the structure. Once assembled and fastened, the BamX components can be stored and transported compactly, thanks to their modular design.
